Quando em 2010 passou-me pela cabeça o que em 2014 se concretizou, um fantasma assolava-me na altura.

De repente tropeço eu numa página da net, em que se falava daquela que viria a ser considerada a 6ª maior invenção de 2010! O autor: Phd. Manuel Torres, um designer espanhol, também estudante no  Royal College of Art and Imperial College London.

A invenção: Spray-on Fabrics technology, uma ideia muito louca, mas que vinha arrasar-me a ideia da Iomoz, da loja das t-shirts, e quem sabe, que pudesse perigar toda esta indústria fantástica que rola em torno da paixão pelas t-shirts, pelas suas formas, cores e desenhos nelas estampadas.

My life was in turmoil when in 2010 I had an idea, an idea that in 2014 came to life.

All of the sudden I stumbled upon a webpage in which I learnt about what came to be the 6^th biggest invention of 2010! The author: PhD. Manuel Torres, a Spanish designer and graduate of the Royal College of Art and the Imperial College London.

The invention: Spray-on Fabrics technology, a very crazy idea but that was taking down the idea of IOMOZ, the T-shirt Shop and possibly put at risk the fantastic industry around the passion for T-shirts, their shapes, colours and patterns.

Esta peça de roupa, surgiu no séc. XIX basicamente para servir como “roupa debaixo” para aquecer. Durante a 1ª guerra mundial, os soldados americanos repararam que os europeus usavam algo idêntico mas em algodão. O algodão absorvia melhor a transpiração, a sensação era bem mais agradável e pegaram nelas e levaram-nas para o outro lado do continente. O tempo passou, e por volta dos anos 50, as grandes estrelas de Hollywood usavam-na, criando um ar mais de sex symbol rebelde, onde por exemplo, James Dean e Marlon Brando, dois monstros da sétima arte, decidiram que ela era seria a estrela do guarda-roupa. As mulheres também a usavam, mas como elas eram largas e era a época das cinturas finas, normalmente davam um nó de lado para mostrarem as curvas. Ficava mal, mas mesmo assim usavam.

This piece of clothing appeared in the 19^th century as an undergarment to warm up the body. During the 1^st world war, American Soldiers noticed that the European wore something identical but made of cotton. Cotton absorbed the sweat better and was more pleasant to wear so they got them and brought them to the other side of the ocean. Time went by and around the 1950’s the big Hollywood stars were wearing them, giving them a sex symbol rebel look. For instance, James Dean and Marlon Brando, two monsters of the 7^th Art, decided the T-shirt would be the star of their wardrobe. Women also wore them but as these were baggy in a time of small waists, normally they would make a knot on the side to show the curves. It didn’t look good but they would wear it like that anyway.

O movimento Hippie e o psicadelismo dos anos 60 deram asas aos tingimentos e acabamentos, a criatividade tornou-a numa tela pessoal onde a liberdade a tudo permitia, e definitivamente chegou a ribalta com as suas cores fortes no apogeu da revolução sexual na década de 70. Depois veio o movimento Grunge dos 80, e diz-se que foi Madonna que a tornou justa e feminina, e assim cresceu até ao séc XXI.

The hippie movement and the psicadelism of the 60’s gave freedom to the dyes and the finishes – creativity transformed the T-shirt in a personal canvas where everything was possible and it definitely became the show stopper with its strong colours in the greatness of the 70’s sex revolution. After that came the Grundge movement of the 80’s and it is said that it was Madonna who made it fitting and feminine and that’s how it evolved until the 21^st century.

E em 2010 o maluco do Manel Torres inventa um spray que se aplica sobre a pele e adere ao corpo tomando a espuma a forma duma t-shirt!? Foi um susto, e alguns pensaram que era o adeus Às velhas Tees!

O pânico no mundo das t-shirts foi-se desvanecendo. O certo é que se passaram 4 anos, as t-shirts ameaçadas na sua existência, resistiram, isto porque a paixão por elas, a sua simplicidade e o seu sentido prático, mantém-se, e tenho a certeza que por cá ficarão por muitos e muitos anos.

And in 2010 crazy Manuel Torres develops a spray that when applied to the skin immediately adheres to it taking the shape of a T-shirt! It was a scary moment and some thought it meant saying goodbye to the Tees!

Eventually the panic in the world of T-shirts started to disappear. Four years passed by and T-shirts, once threatened of ceasing to exist, have resisted. This happened because the passion for T-shirts, their simplicity and functionality continues and I am sure they will stay around for many many years.

And, suddenly, the ideas started to take shape.

Começou tudo por uma associação das minhas imagens do passado com a vontade de criar.

Confesso que desde muito novo, sempre tive a mania de escrever e pintar nas T-Shirts. Era como se visse nelas uma tela em branco, e como adorava desenhar, achava que aquele era o caminho para apresentar no exterior, aquilo que fazia em casa. Passeava-me alegremente com elas, as pessoas riam-se, metiam-se comigo, os meus colegas pediam-me uma, e de facto eram personalizadas!

It all began with a combination of images from my past and my will to create.

I admit that from a very young age I enjoyed writing and painting on T-shirts. I imagined them as blank canvas and, as I loved to draw, I fought that was the ideal way to exhibit outside what I had made at home. I would joyfully walk around in them, people would laugh and talk to me playfully, my classmates would request me to make them one; and these were in fact customized!

Na verdade, eram experiências naquela altura (nos loucos anos 70 e 80), que falhavam às primeiras lavagens, e que hoje quando as recordo, dá-me uma enorme vontade de rir.

As a matter of fact, these were experiments that, at the time (the crazy 70’s and 80’s), failed the first wash and that today make me laugh when I remember them. 

Sempre gostei de arte, sempre admirei as mais variadas formas de expressão, e por essa razão, no baú dos meus desejos, estava guardado esta vontade de criar padrões, uma linha de T-shirts estampadas... uma marca. "I" de Indian, "O" de Ocean e "MOZ" de Mozambique.

I always enjoyed art, I always admired the most various forms of expression and, for that reason, in the chest of my desires, this will to create patterns remained – a line of printed T-shirts… a brand. “I” of Indian, “O” of Ocean and “MOZ” of Mozambique.

 Foi ao Oceano Índico que a IOMOZ e o seu grupo de freelance designers foi buscar a inspiração, para criar uma linha de t-shirts coloridas e de design ímpar. Este Oceano vasto de águas temperadas, de tons coloridos e variados, alcança África, trazendo consigo uma fauna rica e vibrantes em torno dos seus recifes, que contrastam com a fina areia branca, gerando praias belíssimas, onde a terra e o oceano se encontram, numa simbiose perfeita e serena.

It was on the Indian Ocean that IOMOZ and its freelance designers sought their inspiration to create a line of T-shirts with colourful shades and uncommon designs.
